Depot48 Presents Bollyjazz Dectet
30-Dec-2023 | 9 PM Onwards
In a time where any experimentation with music, especially Hindi Film music, meant simply remixing popular tunes to club beats, Nikhil Mawkin envisioned an amalgamation of two seemingly different genres: Hindi Film music and Jazz. It was 2011 in India, and what started as an experiment became a successful project that would bring back to life some of the evergreen melodies from what is commonly referred to as the "Golden Era of Bollywood". Since then, the band has evolved through a vast repertoire of selectively chosen melodies that are relatable, even in a contemporary setting. The arrangements around the melodies include popular Jazz rhythms such as Samba, Bossa Nova, Swing, Funk, etc., allowing musicians to improvise and provide their own expression to a familiar tune.
Bollyjazz has performed in festivals and venues around India and Mexico like Rendezvous Festival Delhi, Tablu Festival Jaipur, Jaipur Literature Festival, Kamani Auditorium, Akshara Theater, Zomaland Delhi 2018, The Piano Man Jazz Club Delhi, and Gurugram, Depot 48 Delhi, and Agora de la Ciudad in Xalapa, México and JacoJazzy Cafe to mention few.
Always trying to find new ways to bring an authentic Jazz setting to this music, Bollyjazz presently has become a global brand that is sharing and exchanging musical ideas between Mexico and India, where musicians from all over the world collaborate making Bollyjazz a genre in itself.
Bollyjazz is a big Band project that brings a refreshing approach to playing classic Hindi Film tunes through a format of Jazz harmony and rhythms. The present set of Bollyjazz as a dectet aims to present a dynamic set with some of the best singers in Delhi and an enthralling horn section.
